Exercise doesn't help depression, study concludes:

A study into whether physical activity alleviates the symptoms of depression has found there is no benefit.

Research published in the British Medical Journal suggests that adding a physical activity intervention to usual care did not reduce symptoms of depression more than usual care alone.

This contrasts with current clinical guidance which recommends exercise to help those suffering from the mental illness, which affects one in six adults in Britain at any one time.

I thought this was true and all - fuck yeah, randomised controlled trials!

This was just a little storefront gallery on Park that has eight Grosz watercolors on display. I clearly wasn’t there to purchase, but they were nice enough to buzz me in anyhow. I asked if I could just take a look at the pieces and they actually seemed pleased to oblige. I’ve never been able to see his work up close, and it is gorgeous. I had a discussion in the past on how some of his work can be problematic and that is something I wouldn’t mind continuing to discuss. But much of his more broadly political and social work is really just beautiful and brilliant to me - not to excuse criticism where criticism may be due in the work that merits that argument.

The fair accusation leveled against him is tied up with his frustrations with capitalist decadence was the commodification of sex work and it’s collaboration with capitalism. His attempts to depict sex work negatively, however, seems to have backfired - the “ugliness” of sex work and workers that he offered actually just displays them as being enthralled in their line of work. His attempt to depict excess accidentally depicts joy and liberation. It’s unfortunate that the realities surrounding him in his subculture didn’t seep into his sensibilities any more. It is also frustrating on a personal level to see this and (continue to) face the reality that there really is rarely a historical example of a white man I can really get behind. As I’ve said though, I’d be a liar if I said that I don’t look at and feel moved by his work, even as I mis- and re-interpret some of it.

As for being in the silent, empty gallery. Another person came in and I got to overhear an interesting conversation about who is buying what internationally, that this fellow who came in knows Grosz’ estate holders, and that he’d love to purchase some work from the gallery (which went from $80,000 for a sketch to $300,000 for the actual watercolor of the one seen above), but that he’s really just looking for Grosz’ oil work right now. I wanted to grab one of these and make for the door right then and there, but I’m sure they would not have buzzed me out.

Sexual Assault in the U.S. Military

What has always confounded, angered, and confused me particularly about rape and sexual assault in the military - two things.

The number of assaults looking at the per-capita rate here fucking skyrockets beyond that of the general population - in a little under 2.5 million in the Armed Forces, you basically have a 1 in ~96 chance of being sexually assaulted in the military, versus a 1 in ~1200 outside of it (adjusted for US adult population, and the RAINN numbers adjusted to eliminate the 12-18 age range). This is also working off the relatively even ratio of men to women in the general population, versus the lopsided 80%-20% men-women split in the military. Judge it yourself against stats on the general trends of what gender is committing this against who, and you’ll find an even more worrying prospect for women in the military.

My second point of disgust with the incidence of sexual assault in the U.S. military is that military bases are among the most surveilled places in the country, and are regularly patrolled by people in a position to report and/or prosecute them, both internally through a court-martial (as it is certainly in violation of the UCMJ) and to send them to civilian courts. These acts are almost certainly caught on camera or by other military personnel. And yes, there is off-base life going on, but that can be brought up in court-martial hearings too - and I can say from experience that these ‘communities’ are very insular, thus how these numbers grow to such a staggering degree. That doesn’t end at the gates (theoretically). There are two bodies of jurisdiction that can be brought against those who commit these acts and they still get a pass as often as everyone else.

What a shit institution.
